VALUE OF CONSTRUCTION WORK DONE, VOLUME TERMS

TOTAL CONSTRUCTION

  • The trend estimate for total construction work done rose 0.7% in the September quarter 2007.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for total construction work done rose 2.8%, to $29,325.1m, in the September quarter, following a revised fall of 2.1% in the August quarter.


BUILDING WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate for building work rose 0.1% in the September quarter. Residential building fell 0.4% while non-residential rose 0.8%.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of building work done rose 4.0% in the September quarter, to $16,664.1m. Residential building rose 1.6% to $9,857.6m and non-residential building rose 7.6%, to $6,806.4m.


ENGINEERING WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate for Engineering work done rose 1.3% in the latest quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for Engineering work done rose 1.4%, to $12,661.0m, in the September quarter.

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This publication provides an early indication of trends in building and engineering construction activity. The data are estimates based on a response rate of approximately 80% of the value of both building and engineering work done during the quarter. More comprehensive and updated results will be released in Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 21 January 2008 and in Engineering Construction Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8762.0) on 18 January 2008.



CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

A new base year, 2005-06, has been introduced into the chain volume estimates which has resulted in revisions to growth rates in subsequent periods. In addition, the chain volume estimates have been re-referenced to 2005-06, thereby preserving additivity in the quarters after the reference year. Re-referencing affects the levels of, but not the movements in, chain volume estimates.



FUTURE CHANGES

Recently, the ABS has implemented improved methods of producing seasonally adjusted estimates, focused on the application of Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) modelling techniques. The revision properties of the seasonally adjusted and trend estimates can be improved by the use of ARIMA modelling. ARIMA modelling relies on the characteristics of the series being analysed to project future period data. The projected values are temporary, intermediate values, that are only used internally to improve the estimation of the seasonal factors. The projected data do not affect the original estimates and are discarded at the end of the seasonal adjustment process. For more information on the details of ARIMA modelling see feature article 'Use of ARIMA modelling to reduce revisions' in the October 2004 issue of Australian Economic Indicators (cat. no. 1350.0). The December 2007 edition of Construction Work Done, Australia, Preliminary (cat. no. 8755.0) will use concurrent seasonal adjustment with ARIMA modelling where applicable to reduce the level of revision to seasonally adjusted estimates.
